The Market Theatre Foundation in partnership with Yes4Youth has the opportunity to offer 17 currently unemployed young people from previously disadvantaged communities the opportunity to rejoin the workforce through a sponsored internship programme.
The 17 successful applicants will have a 12-month fixed contract at R5000 p.m. which will them to benefit from being associated with and gaining hands-on experience at the prestigious and world-renowned cultural institution in the Market
The following Internships are on offer at The Market Theatre Foundation:
#1. Stage Manager Intern
Ref: 2022/11/STM
- Degree/Diploma in: Performing Arts, relevant Theatre Qualifications
- Ability to manage and motivate a team of people in a very stressful environment
- Able to work under pressure
#2. Receptionist Intern
Ref: 2022/11/RT
- Diploma in: Office Admin or equivalent Knowledge of Administrative and clerical procedures
- Knowledge of computers and relevant software applications
- Knowledge of customer service principles and practices
- People and communication skills
- Ability to operate a switchboard

#3. Sound Technician Intern
Ref: 2022/11/ST
- Degree/Diploma in: Sound Technology/Engineering, Performing arts
- This position will suit a sound engineering graduate or a person with previous sound experience.
- Programming cues with a mixing console for a shows or events.
- Operating analogue or digital mixing consoles for shows and events.
#4. Box Office Admin Intern

- Grade 12 / Matric and certificate in Bookkeeping/Customer Service
- Ticket sales
- Banking
- Record management and administrative functions
- Weekly reporting of sales to management
#5. Social Media Intern
Ref: 2022/11/SOM
- Degree/Diploma in: Marketing, Brand Communications, Media studies.
- Basic knowledge of campaign management from conceptualisation to execution
- Awareness of the nature and role of theatre and entertainment industries.
- Hands-on experience with social media monitoring
- Ability to interpret social media traffic, impressions, target and audience
- Knowledge of online marketing
#6. Library Assistant Intern
Ref: 2022/11/LA
- Grade 12 / Matric certificate
- Helping students and colleagues locate books.
- Checking books in and out at the front desk.
- Sorting and shelving books according to their categorization.
- Maintaining records of books taken out and books brought back.
- Cataloguing new arrivals.
#7. Marketing Assistant Intern
Ref: 2022/11/MA
- A Marketing Degree or equivalent qualification is essential for this internship
- Good communication skills
- Target driven
- Ability to cope with rejection.
- Ability to remain calm in fast-paced environments
- Structured individual, with good time management

#8. Research and Archiving Intern
Ref: 2022/11/RAA
- Tertiary qualification in: Humanities (qualification in Photography, Visual and Heritage archives will be advantageous)
- Computer skills (Mac and PC, Excel and Word, E-mail
- Be driven and passionate about photography and the importance of archives for South Africa’s future
- Be able to work under pressure, unsupervised and show strong initiative
- Show a critical awareness of the nature and role of photography, archives in general, and of the education and development landscape for African practitioners
- Background and understanding of Arts, Culture and Heritage-related industries will be advantageous
#9. Lighting Technician Intern

- A National Diploma /Degree in Lighting or relevant qualification
- Operating lighting desks and cues during the technical get-in and performances and efficiently operating effects equipment as per SM cues.
- Read and interpret light plots, cue sheets, and other technical documents
- Assist in the load–in and load–out of lighting in the theatre venue
- Applying technical knowledge of lighting to achieve the determined artistic objectives.
- Repairing or replacing light bulbs or tubes in light fixtures, or replacing entire light fixtures when needed
#10. Technical Assistant Intern

- Degree/Diploma in: Performing Arts or relevant Theatre qualifications
- Ability to manage and motivate a team of people in a very stressful environment
- Maintains all department equipment and ensure they conform to all maintenance and service procedures and are in good working order
- Programming cues with a mixing console for shows or events
- Knowledge of sound/lighting
#11. Supply Chain Management Intern
Ref: 2022/11/SCM
- National Diploma/Degree in: Supply Chain Management
- Acquire quotations in compliance with guidelines stated in the procurement policy
- Facilitate gathering and return of quotations to project managers to allow assessment of responses and finalize the selection of service providers
- Keep track of control documentation, business procedures and processes in relation to supplier requirements and applications
#12. Maintenance Intern
Ref: 2022/11/MI
- Experience with hardware tools and electrical equipment
- Basic understanding of electrical, plumbing or HVAC systems
- Basic math skills
- Good communication skills
- Health & Safety experience will be advantageous.
#13. Human Resources Intern
Ref: 2022/11/HR
- National Diploma/Degree in Human Resource Management or any relevant qualification
- Basic knowledge of South African labour laws
- Accountable and able to handle confidential matters
- Organized and attention to detail

#14. Producing Administrator Intern
Ref:2022/11/PA
- National Diploma/Degree in: Office Administration or equivalent or Arts related qualification
- Applicants will assist the Producer and Assistant Producer with the administration of quotations and contracts
- Computer literate
- basic accounting, communication, and project management skills
- Assist the Production department with the drafting and maintenance of schedules
#15. Media Intern
REF:2022/11/MDI
- Relevant qualification – in Media or Marketing.
- knowledge and skill in Adobe Suite
- Consolidation of material for publications, brochures, postcards etc while ensuring high standards.
- Design media materials according to MPW corporate identity and templates as needed.
- Maintenance of templates and media image archives.
- Follow project plans pertaining to media and publicity including logistical design and time frames.
- Deal with administrative matters, such as quoting
Applicant Requirements:
- Must be 21 -35 years old
- Applicants need to register on the Yes4Youth website (https://www.yes4youth.co.za/)
- Proof of Yes4Youth registration – A screenshot will suffice
- Knowledge of or an interest in the creative arts would be an advantage but is not a requirement.
- Prior to commencing the programme, you will need a Certificated copy of your ID and an Affidavit stating that you are currently unemployed.
